A Tale of The Bayou

Newcomb Pottery: An Enterprise For Southern Women 1895 - 1940 by Jessie Poesch

This was many years ago, when I was just getting into the business.

Picture it... A local auction in small historic town, wonderful antiques, loads of people, one very large vase with Spanish moss on it and said vase sold for the jaw dropping price of $400.00. Yep my first experience with Newcomb Pottery. Wish that I knew then what I know now. Newcomb was in its inception a high quality hand crafted product. Today it continues to rise to higher and higher levels.

This is my favorite reference for Newcomb Pottery. Not a huge book but a book written from the eye of a scholar. This is naturally by one of my favorite published. Published by Schiffer in 1984, this soft back edition contains 160 pages with high quality b/w and studio photos. Many great shots from the work rooms. Contains a listing of the craftsmen and potters, a section of marks and makers. Appendix A tells of plants depicted, select bibliography, full index and a GREAT chronological time line. This is a highly recommend book for anyone who appraises art pottery on a regular basis.

I found this edition online at several locations for under $20.00. The cost of a fair pizza will get you a great useful title on your shelf.
