The Auction Story

Auctions The Social Construction of Value
by Charles W. Smith

If you are involved in any aspect of appraising you have to read this book. This was required reading when I was doing my advancement for the American Society of Appraisers (ASA). It is a great read. I think that it would appeal to anyone who enjoys auctions.

This covers the technical aspects of auctions with chapters like For How Much and to Whom?, The Primary Objective, Structures and Strategies and What Auctions Tell Us About Values. But my favorite was The Search For a Fair Price. This will cover little known information regarding the social, political and economic motives behind all auctions. Did you know that there are three types of auctions? Don't expect this to be a glossy, coffee table book. Its factual and too the point.

Soft bound with 225 pages published by University of California Press. I found numerous copies online for under $10.00. It is worth every penny. You should see my well thumbed copy as a testament.
